Greece

Greece was always a place of very active volcanoes and a very good place to study them.
In Greece in 1640 B.C. one of the first European high-cultures (Minoans) was destryed island volcano of Santorini. This island is connected with the sunken island of "Atlantis".
In 230 B.C. a volcano, Methana, near Athens erupted. The eruption was described by well known writerslike Strabon, Ovid and Pausanias.
Up until 1950 the island Santorini eruptions attracted many geologists and still today there is still research going on.
