Santorini
Santorini:
Santorini is a caldera (complex stratovolcano).
It is a volcanic group Islandat the centreal south end of the Cyclades in the Aegean Sea (Greece). It is a popular tourist destination in Greece, it is known for it's spectacular sea-filled volcanic caldera sourrounded by steep colorful cliffs, the beauty of its villages and fields.
The island group of Santorini is the most well-known and active volcanic centre of the Hellenic Volcanic Arc in the south Aegean Sea. It is a very complex stratovolcano dominated by a large, sea-flooded caldera created by several large explosive eruptions. Different products of about 2 million years of volcanic activity have accumulated arond a small non-volcanic basement, that once formed an island much like the other cycladic islands.
Most of the volcanic layers are vise able in multi-coloured sequences of the impressive steep inner walls of the caldera, striking the visators who reach the is land by boat.

Greece
Greece was always a place of very active volcanoes and a very good place to study them.
In Greece in 1640 B.C. one of the first European high-cultures (Minoans) was destryed island volcano of Santorini. This island is connected with the sunken island of "Atlantis".
In 230 B.C. a volcano, Methana, near Athens erupted. The eruption was described by well known writerslike Strabon, Ovid and Pausanias.
Up until 1950 the island Santorini eruptions attracted many geologists and still today there is still research going on.
